The compulsory attendance law states that all students must attend the designated school day which is defined as classes, lunch, study hall, and Oriole Time periods.

As set forth in Policy 5200, Excused Absences include the absences for religious holidays; religious instruction; suspensions; illness; and for Participation as an election day official, in a high school equivalency program, at a technical college, or in Board-approved program or curriculum modification or curriculum modification programs. A parent/guardian is also permitted to excuse the parent/guardian's child for up to ten (10) days per school year, provided that the request is in writing and is made in advance of the absence. This 10-day limitation for such excused absences would include, but not limited to, absences for family emergencies, celebrations, or trips; attendance at funerals; appointments with medical providers; or attendance at special educational events as approved by the principal/designee.
The District reserves the right to verify excused absences, including those for stated illness. To that end, the School Attendance Officer may request the parent/guardian obtain a written statement from a licensed medical provider or certified prescriber or practitioner, as outlined in Wis. Stat. §118.15(3)(a), in order to substantiate the physical or mental condition of the child. Such excuses are only valid for up to thirty (30) days.
Parent/guardian notes which give a student permission to leave during the school day should also include a time if the student will be returning to school and, if possible, a phone number where a parent/guardian can be reached.
Students who are not feeling well during the school day must report to the Health Room in order for their absence from class to be deemed excused.
As indicated above, all absences that do not qualify as Excused Absences per Policy 5200, and any absences, which is unaccompanied by proper oral or written notice from the student's parent/legal guardian within three (3) days shall be deemed unexcused.
Students are not allowed to leave the building under any circumstances without checking out at the Attendance Office and being issues a permit to leave. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.
If a student does not attend class during the day, the student will be considered unexcused. A student's absence will be recorded as unexcused if s/he remains in the restroom while class is in session. With all unexcused absences, appropriate action will be taken by the High School Leadership Team in accordance with Policy 5200.
A tardy student is less than five (5) minutes late for class and resource/homeroom, provided the student arrives without a pass. A student who arrives for class more than five (5) minutes into the period without a pass is considered to be tardy truant (Z-05) unless the District receives an acceptable excuse from the student's parent/guardian.
Parents cannot excuse tardiness to any class/period after Block 1.
Parents and students shall be informed of the provisions of Policy 5200 and AG 5200.
Students who have a chronic medical condition may be eligible for a medical waiver. The medical waiver, which needs to be signed by a physician, allows for up to fifteen (15) excused medical absences. After fifteen (15) absences parents/guardians need to provide an updated medical waiver.

A student is considered truant if the student is absent part or all of one (1) or more days from school during which the School Attendance Officer, principal, or a teacher has not been notified of the legal cause of such absence by the parent/legal guardian of the absent student. A student who is absent intermittently for the purpose of defeating the intent of Wis. Stat. § 118.15, will also be considered truant.
"Part of a School Day," as defined in Policy 5200, shall mean any time period within a school day, which is from the time the first class period of that day begins until the end of the last class period of that day.
A student will be considered a habitual if the student is absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of five (5) or more days on which school is held during a school semester. These students can be referred for legal action within State law and/or local municipal ordinance.
Hartford Union High School, the Hartford Police Department, and the Mid-Moraine Municipal Court have revised the attendance/truancy policy with a three (3) level process. This policy was implemented August 2015.
