VISION originated in the spring of 1992 with the Hartford Rotary Club initiating a new project to raise funds to support its commitment to local scholarship programs. Upon meeting with Hartford Union High School, it was determined that the Carpentry class could work extremely well in a project like this. An advisory committee was formed consisting of Rotarians and Hartford union High School staff and "Vocational Instruction Supporting Individual Occupation Needs", otherwise known as VISION, was born.
The mission was to construct a single-family home utilizing high school students within an educational program in conjunction with local businesses, then using the proceeds from the sale of that home to provide scholarships. The Hartford Rotary Club Members raised the money to purchase the first lot and arranged construction financing through local banks in order to get this project "out of the ground." The Hartford Rotary Club contracted with suppliers and subcontractors for the various materials and other trades that are not part of the work provided by Hartford Union High School students. The Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce has been involved with the VISION program through promotion and support within the business community. Since its inception, the whole VISION program has developed and grown tremendously beyond the original expectations.
Since 1993, the homes have been successfully completed and sold. Besides the Carpentry class, many other high school students are involved and benefiting from the VISION program. Interior Design, Business and Marketing Co-op, Architecture, Landscaping, TV/Video Production, and the Special Education classes are all participating in VISION. |
