Email Social Studies Teacher
Introduction:
Welcome, my name is Paul Coffin and I am the Instructional Leader and Department Chair of the Social Studies department. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and my masters degree from Cardinal Stritch University. I started working at Hartford Union High School in 2000 as a Special Education Instructor working primarily with students who were identified as having a learning disability. In 2004 I moved full-time into the Social Studies department. In 2013 I took on department manager responsibilities to coincide with my role as an instructional leader. I currently teach Freshman Cohort, Ancient Civilization and Western Civilization. Along with my role as an instructional leader I am also coordinator of the new teacher mentor program. In the Fall I coach varsity football, in the winter I supervise the weight room and in the Spring I coach boys varsity track.
Course Information:
I am currently working as one of the social studies instructors in our Freshman Cohort bundle. The Freshman Cohort combines Social Studies, Science, English and Health into a three period, four credit, project based course. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. I also teach Ancient Civilization which starts with the beginnings of humankind and moves through the development of civilizations and empires up to the fall of the Roman Empire. Western Civilization starts historically with the collapse of the Roman Empire and progress through time up to the end of the French Revolution.
