Letter from Dr. Michael Kremer to the HUHS Community
June 2007

The Future Starts Here

We are a student oriented district where children come first and where students always remain at the heart of our commitment.  Thanks to the efforts of our talented and dedicated staff, strong support from our Board of Education, involved parents and a community that values education, our students benefit from a rich and varied curriculum.

Our goal is to insure that all students learn to the best of their abilities.  To meet the educational needs of each child, we offer a comprehensive, integrated curriculum focused on the knowledge and processes students need for success in school and life beyond high school.  Hartford Union High School District promotes the use of technology in the classroom.  We support our teachers with training, selection and evaluation of software, and support to integrate technology into the curriculum.

Our highly ranked high school has been praised for it’s comprehensive curriculum.  We offer a wide variety of educational opportunities to students at all learning levels:

  • Broad spectrum of course offerings
  • Specialized and alternative programs
  • Full range of advanced placement and honors courses across the curriculum.
  • Arts and athletic programs.

Students take courses that challenge them intellectually, to correspond with their career interests, and prepare them for life after high school.  They can participate in athletic and academic teams, clubs, student government, community service and arts activities.  We aim to help students succeed and complete high school in productive and purposeful ways.  Through our curriculum and our teaching, we work to insure that students develop a set of competencies in qualities to succeed.  To succeed not just today, but in the future also.

We value our communities’ strong support of education and encourage you to find out more about our district, including Board of Education information, community services, and more.   And by the way, if you would like to get involved and make a difference in the lives of our students, we welcome volunteers.

After my first year as superintendent, I wish I could say that all of our challenges have been met and overcome; I don’t think that will ever be the case of any district or any educator.  We will continue our progress in addressing major learning issues until erased from existence.  We will continue to face political battles, both local and as well as at the state and national levels.  Our budgets will never keep pace with the dreams we have for our students.  Our students will continue to be children growing into young adults, with all of the joy, heartache and confusion inherent in that journey.

All issues come and go and evolve into new concerns.  I do believe that our efforts have strengthened the district’s capacity to respond when topics are raised.  By instituting a strategy I will call “excellence by design” our team will establish a process for a data driven, continuous improvement process that can only enhance our district over the long term.  In addition, we will revisit the district’s strategic plan, in essence our preferred future, during the month of October, 2007.

In closing, I want to thank the School Board, and community for the opportunity to lead a very good school district that has the opportunity to become even better.  To do so, will require that all of us pursue a common mission, together.
