Focus on Current Events Resources

News can be accessed through a variety of "medium." Each medium presents a unique set of strengths and weaknesses.

Newspapers | Magazines | AV | Internet

Newspapers
offer immediate news printed and delivered on a daily or weekly basis.
Print
Print newspapers offer a constant source of news and give the reader the opportunity to browse the headlines. The HUHS Library subscribes to a number of major newspapers, including:

  • WestBend News
  • Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • Wisconsin State Journal
  • Chicago Tribune
  • New York Times
  • Wall Street Journal
  • USA Today
  • International Herald Tribute
Online
You can access newspapers online through EBSCO Host (select the Newspaper Source Plus database) and on comprehensive research sights such as e-Library and SIRS Researcher.
Magazines
articles offer in-depth coverage, printed and delivered weekly or monthly.
Print

Print magazines present news stories alongside photos, information graphics, and related "sidelines," providing readers with a more complete understanding of the issues at hand.

The HUHS library subscribes to many weekly, monthly, and bi-monthly magazines.

Online

Delivered via the computer, HTML Full Text articles present only the text of an article. PDF articles are a "copy" of the original that includes pictures and original layout. Ask your teacher if this will be considered a "print" resource.

e-Library has access to both newpaper and magazine articles previously published in print. Also try EBSCO Host, a database that indicates if we own a hard copy of the magazine.

AV News
allows us to listen and watch news through a variety of resources, including photos and other graphics, radio, television, and online broadcasting.
Maps

Maps can be easily located online using CountryWatch or CultureGrams.

Photos/Graphics/Video

Current news photographs and information graphics can be located at AP Images (in affilation with the Associated Newswire). Online radio stations such as NPR (National Public Radio) and those featured on Worldwide Radio as well as many television news stations provide downloads of their broadcasts. Check out the podcasts on--> PBS | BBC | NPR

Internet News
is so plentiful, readers must be
careful to remember that publishing to the internet is a simple process. This
news is only as reliable as it's source.

Be sure to consider:

  • the sponsoring news agency (reputation, biases)
  • sources cited in the article (balanced presentation)

The following represent some reliable sources:
