This course offers all students, regardless of prior computer knowledge, the opportunity to obtain hands on computer hardware skills, This course is set up in two tiers. Tier One will be for those students with limited computer experience, who wish to gain an introductory working knowledge of PCs. Tier Two will be for those students who wish to gain an advanced knowledge necessary to service microcomputer hardware and operating systems. The TIER TWO students will be preparing for the CompTIA A+ Essentials exam. Upon successful completion of the A+ exam, students will be awarded Honors credit. Students will be given the opportunity to decide which tier they want to pursue.

Automated Financial Accounting |
In this advanced course, students will apply prior accounting knowledge to real world applications through various computerized accounting systems such as Microsoft Office Accounting, Excel, and payroll software. Students will also gain an in-depth knowledge of payroll and payroll tax calculations while completing various accounting transactions and financial statements. Weighted Grade credit as well as earning college credits are available by passing the CLEP (College Level Examination Program®) Accounting exam. Students in this course can also receive up to seven credits through Moraine Park Technical College.

This course gives students the opportunity to apply banking and financial concepts to both personal and business situations. Students will have the opportunity to explore career areas in the banking, finance, and investments fields. Students will gain and be able to apply banking and investment knowledge to his/her own life. Various investment, banking, and retirement options such as mutual funds, stocks, bonds, certificates of deposits, checking/savings accounts, loans, insurance, budgets, IRAs, and 401Ks will be covered. Each student will participate in an individual budgeting project as well as a stock market simulation.

Students learn and earn in a business environment. Skills learned in the classroom are applied in the workplace and new skills are gained while employed. Emphasis areas would be administrative service, accounting/financial, and management information systems. To earn credit, students are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, complete time sheets, write quarterly reports, and earn satisfactory employer job performance ratings. State Certified Co-op, Wisconsin Employability Skills, and Youth Apprenticeship certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of designated competencies. Participation in FBLA, an Association of Business Students, is strongly encouraged.

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic terminology and concepts associated with operating and/or owning a business. Topics discussed in this course include: Basic Business Operations, Business Ethics, Managerial Responsibilities, Leadership/Motivational Theories, Human Resources, Marketing, and Financial Management. In addition, all students will have the opportunity to develop a professional business plan for a business for which they create. Students can earn Weighted Grade credit by successfully passing the Principles of Management CLEP (College Level Examination Program®) exam which can be applied to a four year university. Students in this course can also receive credit through Moraine Park Technical College.

This course prepares students for post-secondary accounting. Advanced accounting concepts and principles are presented to students and applications are completed. Emphasis is given to the analysis and interpretation of financial activity, preparing and interpreting financial statements, and applying accounting theory in decision making. This course allows students to keep up with the constantly changing world of business and information technnology. Students will learn how to utilize new input technologies such as digital cameras, handwriting recognition, Audacity and voice recognition software. Time management skills will also be explored in this class through the use of MS Outlook, MS OneNote, and Palm Pilots. Students will not only learn how new input technologies relate to the business world but will also be able to use these technologies to improve his/her time management skills.

Exploring Business will introduce students to the constantly changing world of Business & Information Technology. This course is designed to explore a wide variety of business foundations. Topics discussed in this course include: general business terms and concepts, marketing principles, business communication, government and business, business law, business careers, accounting, personal finance/banking, international business, website design, digital input technologies, and basics of computer hardware. This course is a great stepping stone for students with a strong interest in the field of business and information technology, yet are unaware of the specific niche they desire to study. |

This required course for HUHS juniors will “focus” on career exploration and development while expanding upon technology skills previously learned. Students will have the opportunity to examine post-secondary options and resources available for success. Employability skills and career goals will also be covered. Focus on Information Technology |
This required course for HUHS freshmen will “focus” on word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications using Microsoft Office software. Competencies learned in this class work toward proficiency tests for MOS Certification in Microsoft Word and Excel. Students will also learn document formats and technology skills used throughout the school. Students will begin their HUHS electronic portfolios in this course. |
Indep Study for Certification |
This course will allow students to specialize in a specific area of computer concentration and work towards receiving an industry-recognized certification in either software or networking through Microsoft. Certifications include Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). Other certifications may be obtained via instructor approval. Students will prepare for certification via hands-on exercises, online tutorials, and individual instruction from the instructor. Students who pass the certification exam may earn Weighted Grade credit. Students enrolled in this course may also receive credit through Moraine Park Technical College.

Leadership & Employability Skills |
This senior-level course was created for students who wish to shape their leadership or work experiences into positive, credentialed, learning experiences. Course content revolves around completion of either the Youth Leadership Skill Certificate or the Employability Skills Certificate. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of business and marketing related topics through the design and implementation of multiple school, community, and work-based projects. Throughout these projects students will have the opportunity to apply a variety of skills valued by employers, such as communication, ethical standards, teamwork, and technology skills. Students enrolled in Business or Marketing Co-op and not concurrently enrolled in an Advanced Business and Information Technology (BIT) course their senior year will need to enroll in this course. Please refer to the BIT Department State Skill Certificate Options chart on page 14.

The Marketing Co-op student has the option of being released early two hours each day to learn and earn at an entry-level marketing occupation. To earn credit, students are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, complete time sheets, write quarterly reports, and earn satisfactory employer job performance ratings. Students planning to take Marketing Co-op should plan early so that the prerequisites can be taken during sophomore and junior years. A state skills standards certificate is awarded upon successful completion of designated competencies in General Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Retail Marketing Professional Sales, Executive Leadership, Sports and Entertainment or the new E-Commerce. Participation in DECA, an Association of Marketing Students, is strongly encouraged.

Marketing I is now a SEMESTER LONG course that introduces students to the world of marketing products and services. Emphasis is placed on promotion, selling and product development and planning. Marketing I is a great class for those who plan to attend college or go directly into the workforce. Students can earn Weighted Grade credit by successfully passing the Principles of Marketing CLEP (College Level Examination Program®) exam which can be applied to a four year university. Students that earn a “B” or better also earn Advanced Standing credit through MATC. DECA, an association of marketing students, allows students to develop and apply marketing concepts outside the classroom and is strongly encouraged. |

Marketing II is a year long class that focuses on specific areas of marketing and builds on the foundations of marketing. The class is hands-on and focuses on Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Travel and Tourism Marketing, E-Marketing, Retail Marketing, Market Research, and International Business and Marketing. The Sports and Entertainment Marketing curriculum includes the development and operations of “March Madness” and “Mr. HUHS.” This is a great class for anyone who wants to apply marketing concepts or is considering a possible career in a business related field. Students can earn Weighted Grade credit by successfully passing the Principles of Marketing CLEP (College Level Examination Program®) exam which can be applied to a four year university.

Principles of Accounting is a course which gives the student a foundation in accounting theory and practice. Students will gain knowledge relating to service and merchandising businesses using sole proprietor, partnerships and corporate accounting principles. Website Design & Development I |
In this course, students will go beyond the basics of creating web pages by developing web design strategies and techniques. Students will use Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash to create, publish, and manage websites. Course content will include creating a variety of graphic elements and dynamic web pages. Students enrolled in this course can also receive credit through Moraine Park Technical College. Students will also learn material covered in the Certified Internet Webmaster industry certification and have the opportunity to earn Weighted Grade credit by passing the CIW exam. |
Website Design & Development II |
This course expands upon content in the first semester course as students learn new techniques to enhance websites such as digital narratives, video editing, advanced Flash, and interactive server page technologies. Students will learn and apply techniques to work with client websites using the Macromedia Suite and Adobe Photoshop. Students will also learn material covered in the Certified Internet Webmaster industry certification and have the opportunity to earn Weighted Grade credit by passing the CIW exam.
