Coaching Philosophy
Our basketball team will be disciplined and fundamentally sound. We will have an offense that controls the ball and the tempo of the game. We will also have a defense that is aggressive and displays a “never giving up” attitude.
A. Discipline
- On the court conduct must be exemplary. The community will view that as a representation of the school. It is up to us as coaches to give a quality representation.
- Players earn respect of teachers and administrators. I strongly believe and will stress to players that the effort in the classroom needs to match the effort on the court.
- The program exemplifies disciplined leaders in the community. Players are role models for the youth in the community. Coaches are role models for their players.
- Practice equals a strong work ethic, on time, and accountability.
- Training rules equals no alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc. Players will need to follow the co-curricular code or they will serve the consequences.
- Our program will help girls become young women. We will raise our level of expectation, so that the players will raise their level of performance on and off the court.
B. Fundamentally Sound
- Fundamental skills equals separation from mediocre teams to very good teams.
- Little things become big things in a hurry. Teams can’t afford mental breakdowns.
- Take losses and learn from them (turn losses into a positive experience).
- When a team is fundamentally prepared for competition, it provides opportunities to compete against more talented players (this is why the most talented teams don’t always win the game).
The basketball program will demonstrate continuity. It is very crucial that there is loyalty throughout the entire program. Coaches and players will need to believe and run the same basic systems. This also means following the same discipline and fundamental principles that are put into effect for the whole program. Coaches will also be expected to act consistently with what they teach (less confusing for the girls’ in the program).
Overall, coaching is not just about teaching the skills of a sport, but also the values of life. As a coach, it’s extremely important to have a strong rapport with your student athletes. Players look up to coaches. If coaches show that they are there for their players (even out of practice), they will respect you that much more. I can honestly say without the coaches I have had in the past, there would be no way I would be where I am at today. They have taught me so much more than just the game of basketball, and I want to do the same for my players I coach!
