Ms. Christel joined HUHS during the 2005-2006 school year. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Marian University and a Masters Degree in School Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Along with her school social work duties, Ms. Christel also serves as the district's Homeless Liason and coordinator of the Student Assistant Program.
The School Social Work Role
The school social worker uses a wide range of evidence-based strategies to ensure that students are in the classroom physically and mentally ready to learn. A strength- based approach is utilized to assist the student and or family in breaking down social-emotional barriers that may prevent student success.
School social workers understand how to go out into the greater community and students' homes to engage families and community organizations to create better outcomes for students, like increased academic achievement, safety, attendance, and social -emotional behavioral functioning.
Common School Social Work Duties
- Consultation with teachers, administrators, and other school staff
- Community referrals
- Member of the Pupil Services Team
- Member of the IEP team for Special Education Evaluations
- Serve as District LEA
- Crisis intervention and coordination
- Assessment for learning and mental health issues
- School-home-community liaison
- Student Individual and group counseling
- AODA intervention and prevention
