Oriole Academy Newsletter #5

We hope this finds everyone enjoying the early spring. The early warm temperatures are very welcoming along with the green grass and robins!

We have recently had a number of speakers from the community visit Oriole Academy in conjunction with the Civics class. Justin Drew - city planner, Paul Stephens and Ann Frey - fire and rescue department, Tom Horvath – police captain, and Scott Henke – mayor have shared with the students what it takes to run a city. They shared the qualifications that it takes to do their job and answered all the questions that the students had. We appreciate them taking the time to visit us.

We recently had a number of students that visited two local elementary schools to read to the students for Dr Seuss's birthday. We were lucky to receive a short bit of air time on Channel 12 news as they were visiting Lincoln School to follow up on the tornado damage they received last year. The students, both young and old, enjoyed the time spent together.

Some students sent Valentine's to the troops in Iraq . Both this and the elementary school activity added to their community service hour requirement. Students that are here for the full year have a 40 hour community service requirement whereas the semester students have to complete 20 hours.

Spring parent conferences will be held on April 4 th from 5:30 to 8:30 . We encourage all of you to visit as there is only a short time until graduation. Some of the students are well on their way to meeting all of the requirements for graduation whereas others are a bit behind. We don't want anyone to be surprised when June 10 th arrives and they are not graduating.

If you have questions or concerns prior to conferences as to where your child stands please feel free to call us.

Sincerely,

Laurie Horst and Nicole Daliege
