Introductory letter to students, staff and community from
Dr. Michael Kremer

As I begin my time as interim superintendent of the Hartford Union High School District, I feel it is important to share a short biographical sketch of whom it is who will be providing leadership for the 2006-07 school year.

Educational Background

After graduating from Mandan High School in North Dakota in 1968, I attended Jamestown College and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1972. I earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1976 and completed my doctorate at Iowa State University in 1985.

Professional Experience

I have worked in public education as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent for over thirty-four years in Marshalltown, Iowa, the Janesville and Sussex Hamilton districts in Wisconsin, and most recently in Hopkins, Minnesota. Over the years, I have been very active in many professional organizations, including boards focused on desegregation/integration issues, the association of school administrators at both the state and national levels, Mid-American school administrators, national suburban school superintendents, and an educational research board at the University of Minnesota.

Awards and Honors

Various organizations have recognized my commitment to and leadership of public education. In 1999, I was named “Minnesota Superintendent of the Year”, and was one of four finalists for “National Superintendent of the Year”. In 2006, I received the “Dr. Effie Jones Humanitarian Award” for my work focused on women and minorities.

Personal Background

Interestingly, I am one of eight children, all of whom have chosen careers in education. I have two grown daughters and soon will have my sixth grandchild. Whenever possible, I spend time with my family.

I am very excited and looking forward to becoming a part of the Hartford Union High School district, building on its outstanding educational reputation. With respect and admiration of the past, I look forward to strengthening relationships between the school community, parents, staff, and our student population. Our shared mission must be preparing all learners to achieve their personal best. I believe that students learn best in a school environment that is safe, orderly, and free from disruption and that honesty, integrity, respect, and responsibility are essential in achieving a commitment to reach one's potential throughout life. But no matter how hard we in school try, we know that school success begins at home. Schools can't do it alone. The family remains the single most important influence on student achievement. Therefore, I look forward to meeting all of you and strengthening our partnership in educating the young people of HUHS.
